Cape Town residents are being urged to plan ahead this week as a series of scheduled water supply interruptions roll out across the metro, with multiple suburbs expected to experience temporary outages while critical maintenance is carried out.
The City’s Water and Sanitation Directorate has confirmed that the work, ranging from valve replacements to pipeline upgrades, is part of a broader effort to stabilise the water network and reduce losses.
The following areas will be affected:
Maintenance work: pipe and valve installations, repairs and replacements
Parts of Somerset West
- Tuesday, 21 April, from 8am to 6pm
The water supply will be shut off to allow for the replacement of a faulty valve at the Louis Botha Reservoir. Residents are advised to store enough water in advance.
Gordon’s Bay
- Tuesday, 21 April, from 9am to 6pm
A temporary shut-off will enable the replacement of a faulty pressure-reducing valve. Affected roads include Miller Street, Faure Street, Gordonia Street and parts of Beach Road.
Fish Hoek
- Tuesday, 21 April, from 9am to 7:30pm
- Wednesday, 22 April, from 9am to 7:45pm
Water supply will be interrupted for over two days to allow for construction work on the main water supply. Affected roads include Castleman, Carmichael, Harrington, Berg and Main Road areas.
Retreat
- Tuesday, 21 April to Thursday, 23 April, from 9am to 7:30pm daily
A multi-day shutdown will affect parts of Retreat, including Frankfort Road, Pollen Road and surrounding streets, as work continues on the main supply network.
Oranjezicht
- Tuesday, 21 April, from 8am to 8pm
- Thursday, 23 April, from 8am to 8pm
Two separate shut-offs will take place as part of ongoing pipeline replacement projects in the area. Streets affected include Breda, Upper Orange, Belmont, Montrose and surrounding roads.
Lotus River
- Wednesday, 22 April, from 8am to 4pm
A temporary disruption will affect parts of Lotus River within the Strandfontein Road and Fifth Avenue boundaries.
Rondebosch
- Wednesday, 22 April, from 9am to 2pm (test shut-off)
- Saturday, 25 April, from 8am to 6pm
Maintenance work on valves and a fire hydrant will result in a weekend water shutdown affecting Main Road and nearby streets.
Parts of Kommetjie
- Wednesday, 22 April, from 9am to 7:30pm
Residents within the Lighthouse Road and Van Imhoff Way area will experience no water supply during this period.
Part of Paarden Eiland
- Thursday, 23 April, from 9am to 5pm
The water main will be shut off to allow for a new connection installation along Neptune Road and surrounding streets.

Zero-pressure tests (ZPT) and conditional assessments
- Tuesday, 21 April: Kraaifontein, Peerless Park East and West, Scottsville, Eikendal (9am to 5pm)
- Tuesday, 21 April: Brackenfell North, Welgelee, De Tuin, Marlborough Park (10am to 4pm)
- Tuesday, 21 April: Ravensmead West, Parow, Elsies River (9am to 4pm)
- Wednesday, 22 April: Malibu Village (9am to 4pm)
- Wednesday, 22 April: Manenberg South, Surrey Estate, Gugulethu (9am to 4pm)
In these areas, some residents may experience low water pressure, while others may have no water during testing periods.
City officials note that while every effort has been made to schedule the work at less disruptive times, unforeseen complexities may lead to longer outages. All maintenance zones are treated as construction sites and remain off-limits to the public.
For a short period after supply is restored, water may appear discoloured or milky due to trapped air in the pipes; this typically clears once the water settles.
Meanwhile, residents are encouraged to store enough water in clean, sealed containers ahead of time and to keep taps closed during outages to prevent water loss or damage when supply returns.
