The South African Weather Services (SAWS) has issued a warning to residents of the south-western regions of South Africa as a well-developed cold front is expected to make landfall early on Saturday morning, 7 June 2025.
Spanning until Monday, 9 June 2025, this weather system is likely to unleash a torrent of wet, cold and windy conditions across various provinces, Cape {town} Etc reports.
According to SAWS, the highest precipitation is anticipated to occur on Saturday, with rainfall amounts between 10 to 20mm expected in the western parts of the Western Cape and significantly higher totals of 30 to 40mm over mountainous regions.
‘The forecast also indicated the likelihood of light snowfall in the Western Cape mountains, as well as the southern high-lying areas of the Northern Cape,’ SAWS said.
As the cold front progresses eastward throughout the weekend, local farmers and the general public are advised to brace themselves for harsh weather conditions.
The warnings include forecasts of very rough seas and strong winds, which present a significant risk both on land and at sea.
Officials caution that the combination of cold, heavy rainfall and strong winds could create a series of challenges:
- Difficult driving conditions due to flooded roads may lead to longer travel times for commuters.
- Disruption to essential services could be localised and short-term, impacting daily life.
- Navigation at sea could be hazardous, with very choppy seas complicating maritime activities.
- For farmers, the adverse weather could lead to loss of livestock and impact agricultural production.
With these threats looming, it becomes imperative for residents, especially those in vulnerable areas, to adopt precautionary measures and stay informed about weather updates through official channels.
