In a tragic incident early this Saturday morning, a fire swept through the informal settlement of Nomzamo in Strand, claiming the lives of two individuals.

The City of Cape Town’s fire and rescue service reported that a devastating fire swiftly engulfed the settlement of Nomzamo in Strand.
According to IOL, fire services were alerted to the fire around 2 am, prompting an immediate dispatch of firefighters to the Nomzamo settlement.
According to the City’s Fire and Rescue Services spokesperson, Jermaine Carelse, the blaze was eventually contained.
‘Several firefighting crews were dispatched to the scene and firefighters managed to contain and extinguish the blaze by 3 o’clock.’
‘The blaze destroyed five informal structures and left seven people displaced,’ Carelse added.
Carelse stated that authorities are still investigating the cause of the fire.
‘Sadly, the bodies of the two men were found among the debris and were certified deceased by medical personnel. While the cause of the fire is yet to be identified, the South African Police Service is investigating the matter.’
