According to South Africa’s Justice Ministry, Rajesh and Atul Gupta were detained by UAE law-enforcement authorities on Monday.
“Discussions between various law enforcement agencies in the UAE and South Africa on the way forward are ongoing. The South African government will continue to cooperate with the UAE,” the statement reads.
It’s been reported that the detention of the brothers has triggered the start of high-level discussions to bring them back into the country to face charges of corruption, which spans over three years and resulted in the state capture under former President Jacob Zuma.
A judicial inquiry into state graft confirmed the close relationship between the brothers and the former President. The Guptas are believed, by the government, to have stolen R500 billion under Zuma’s rule.
The brothers have allegedly denied wrongdoing and will reportedly seek bail later this week.
This is a developing story.
