A seal was recently discovered strolling along Jakes Gerwel Drive near Klipfontein Road. The area was secured by several law enforcement agencies while they awaited the SPCA Wildlife Unit’s arrival.

The seal has been contained and will be monitored before being returned to its natural habitat.

On Wednesday, 21 December, Alderman JP Smith posted to social media about a seal that was found walking down Jake’s Gerwel Drive at Klipfontein Road.

Smith said:

“The mysterious circumstances of its arrival will be investigated by the SPCA. The Cape Fur Seal is only found around our local waters and is one of the strongest, most muscular seals. When provoked, it can deliver a nasty bite.”

A seal’s journey so far from the ocean will remain a mystery as the SPCA is unsure of how it got there in the first place.

One theory is that it swam into a canal and washed away by strong currents, or that it was captured and dumped after its captor learned how expensive fish was, perhaps as a strange Christmas present for someone’s mother-in-law.

Her holiday shopping will have to wait, though, because Santa the seal, as she was affectionately referred to by onlookers, skipped into the water and swam away with a wave of her flipper.
