The expectations are always high when you’re invited to a property owned by Virgin Limited owner Sir Richard Branson. It comes as no surprise that Branson has a secret love affair with the Cape. He visits often and has extended his humanitarian work to include our beautiful Mother City.

And if Franschhoek is good enough for a knight, it’s good enough for us. Mont Rochelle is tucked away in a corner of the Franschhoek Valley and away from the hustle bustle of the little town which makes it an ideal place to unwind and catch your breath.

Pause to enjoy the views of the mountain range.

The lawns are green and lush and give the convincing impression of extending into the mountainside. The views are immaculate and give you a fair idea of the unadulterated beauty of the Franschhoek area.

When dusk falls, the air is crisp and fresh, and the sunset can only be enjoyed while sipping on a glass of chardonnay from the very same vineyard you are gazing upon.

There are two restaurants on the property, Miko is the more formal setting while the Country Kitchen offers a more informal light lunch menu.

Currently, Miko is hosting an intimate Winemaker Dinner once a month, where grape enthusiasts enjoy a 5-course menu paired with carefully selected Mont Rochelle wines together in the company of the winemaker, Dustin Osborne.

Winemaker at Mont Rochelle, Dustin Osborne

Osborne is very passionate about the wines he creates, and you can taste it in every sip. His understanding and knowledge of everything wine is astounding – you know your palate is in good hands.

Through each artfully created plate, a wine is paired to match the flavours and bring out the nuances of key ingredients. Osborne skillfully guides guests through the wine journey of each vintage and imparts knowledge only a winemaker could know. It brings you closer to the wine and you leave with a better understanding of each bottle served.

The menu is outstanding, an ode to the best fresh produce and meat available in the Cape region. From the most sumptuous grilled cauliflower and bacon soup to the cured Franschhoek Trout, each dish is deliciously prepared and superbly complimented by the wine.

Each dish is deliciously prepared and superbly complimented by the wine.

And if you’re indulging in the food and wine pairing we highly recommend spending the night. The accommodation is modern and spacious with an open shower which is more fun than you might think. The sunlight slinks into your room at the crack of dawn and when you open the curtains the mountains and greenery pour in. Breakfast is an elaborate affair of a buffet and a la carte menu and more of the gorgeous view to enjoy.

The one-of-a-kind Winemaker Dinner evenings are priced at R750 per person and take place from 7pm on the last Thursday of every month.

Spaces are limited, so advance bookings are recommended.
