Bree Street favourite fable, long known for its inventive cocktails and high-energy atmosphere, is turning the page with the launch of an all-new food offering – a casual yet sophisticated dinner menu designed to complement its storytelling spirit and stylish crowd.
Until now, fable has been the go-to spot ‘in between’: between dinner and the club, between after work and heading home, or between pre-drinks and late-night revelry.

Now, with the appointment of Head Chef Mongezi ‘MG’ Mzoneli, fable is writing a new chapter – the place to be for dinner.
‘We wanted to bring something fresh to Bree Street – a menu that, like our cocktails, is playful, flavour-driven, and full of personality,‘ says fable founder Josh Sarembock. ‘And I think MG is the perfect chef to bring the concept to life.’
A rising star in Cape Town’s food scene, Chef MG brings a bold and intuitive approach to the kitchen – one that blends global techniques with local inspiration and a deep respect for flavour.

With time spent in some of South Africa’s most celebrated kitchens, including The Greenhouse, and further sharpening his craft in Thailand, Luxembourg and France, MG brings a blend of curiosity, creativity and connection to the plate. His dishes are personal, flavour-forward and made with one thing in mind – pure enjoyment.
‘I’m cooking the kind of food I love to eat,’ says MG. ‘It’s bold, creative, and full of heart. It’s about serving up dishes that are fun, familiar, and just a little unexpected.’
Expect flavour-packed small plates such as beef kofta flatbreads with Cape Malay sauce and rooibos-kombucha glazed pork belly with miso custard and chilli-pickled apple – alongside lighter, herb-forward options such as the garden bowl with crispy Brussels sprouts and charred corn and the barley and buckwheat with mint, basil and Parmesan.

For mains, the offering expands with sophisticated takes on café-style dishes such as dry-aged chicken breast with sweet potato fondant and basil-parsley pesto, sirloin with béarnaise sauce and a king oyster mushroom with black garlic and sweet potato that makes a compelling case for plant-based indulgence.

Dessert lovers can end the evening with either burnt white chocolate sponge with lime mousse and spiced pineapple or signature fable apple tart with meringue – a final flourish that is as tasty as it is unexpected – perhaps with a signature fable cocktail too.

From healthy and herbaceous to rich and decadent, the offering is dynamic, delicious and designed to pair seamlessly with fable’s cocktail-led experience.
