The festive season has always been my favourite time of the year, writes Cape {town} Etc’s Lynn Cupido. Decorating the Christmas tree, watching tons of holiday films, spending time with family, and let’s not forget about the copious amounts of food. Unfortunately, we’re living through a pandemic, which means this time of the year is looking a little different for many people around the world.
Border closures and social distancing could make it difficult for many to spend time with loved ones this year, but that doesn’t mean we should throw Christmas completely in the trash. If you find yourself alone on December 25th – don’t stress! Instead, embrace the festive season and whip up something fancy and delicious for one. The best part? You get to keep all the leftovers!
Here are a few helpful tips for cooking a dinner for one:
Axe the turkey
If you’ve ever attempted to cook a turkey, you would know how time-consuming and difficult it can be to get it just right. Instead, opt for a smaller bird that’s not chicken such as duck. This great alternative provides that festive feast without having to try too much.
Be prepared
Just because you’re cooking for one doesn’t mean you should spend the entire day slaving away in front of the stove. Most chefs agree that cooking the day before will save you trouble and relieve you from feeling overwhelmed.
Don’t be afraid to cut some corners
I’m not the best cook and I love structure, so following a recipe to the T is something I can’t help but do. However, it’s the craziest time of the year and sometimes there’s no time to make something from scratch like your favourite food blogger. To save you some time, head to the store and grab a few pre-packaged veggies and side dishes. They’re just as yummy.

Don’t forget to relax
The best part about spending Christmas solo is that you get to eat whenever you would like. No, 12pm lunchtime deadline, which means there’s less stress to getting everything ready on time – bliss! Cook at your own pace and eat a little later if you feel like it – Christmas is your oyster.
When all else fails, order in
Whipping up something scrumptious on Christmas day can be stressful. If you’re looking to switch things up this year, then why not forgo the stress and get something delivered straight to your home. Perhaps you can opt for a Christmas meal actually cooked by a chef or grab a mouth-watering sushi platter if you’re looking for something non-traditional. Spending the holidays alone can be the perfect excuse to put down the cooking utensils and laze about!
