You often find it in crystal decanters in quaint little B&Bs or when you’re enjoying a slice of cake on a cold winter’s day. However, there’s a whole other side to sherry that we haven’t yet explored. Thankfully, Douglas Green Sherry is ready to show us the way by introducing us to the finest sherry in the world, which also happens to be the first authentic Spanish Sherry range in South Africa.
With its roots in the Western Cape Winelands, it was unsurprising that Douglas Green Sherry chose to launch their new range in Cape Town. Wine lovers and Spanish diplomats gathered at Villa 47 to experience the sherry in true style. There are three different sherries in the range – Pale Cream, Medium Dry and Cream – and each one has its own distinct colour, nose and palate. Named numerically for easy reference the, sherry gets darker as you move up.
No.1 (Pale Cream) is light with floral and nutty aromas and flavours. No.2 (Medium Dry) is a little more complex with hints of dried fruit, nuts and spice while No.3 is the sweeter sherry, bursting with honey aromas and flavours. All three were paired with a starter main and dessert (thankfully served canapé style so we could try it all) to show its versatility. While drinking sherry with food isn’t something we do often, it’s the norm in Spain and after our meal, it’s easy to see why.
Although Douglas Green has been in the sherry business since 1942, the recent move to import sherry from Spain comes in the wake of South Africa’s 2004 trade agreement with the European Union, which states that the term ‘sherry’ can only be used for authentic sherries from Spain’s ‘Sherry Triangle’. So much like Champagne that can only bear the name if it hails from the Champagne region of France. The Douglas Green sherries have been sourced from the wine cellars of Caballero in Spain’s foremost Sherry districts – Sanlucar de Barrameda, Puerto de Santa Maria and Jerez de la Frontera – so you know you’re getting the real stuff.
And with sherry is joining the ranks of wine and gin as a contemporary drink enjoyed by all, the Douglas Green Sherry range is your best bet for an authentic taste experience.
