After weeks of uncertainty, cancelled bookings and a sudden shutdown that rattled Cape Town’s dining community, Farro has officially reopened its doors in Gardens, bringing a new autumn menu and a renewed sense of momentum with it.
The restaurant resumed service yesterday, on Wednesday, following a difficult month that saw water and municipal services disconnected at the property it occupies, according to News24.
As highlighted by Time Out Cape Town, the dispute stemmed from historic municipal debt linked to the building rather than the restaurant itself, but the fallout forced the small, independently run eatery to temporarily close its doors.
Meanwhile, for owners Alex and Eloise Windebank, the reopening marks the end of a period they previously described as emotionally and financially draining.
‘We are so excited to be able to open our doors again after an excruciatingly challenging month. We have been overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and support from the community, and we can’t wait to welcome you back into our home,’ said Eloise.
The closure quickly became a talking point across Cape Town’s food scene, with regular patrons and local diners rallying behind the restaurant online.
Messages of support circulated widely on social media while customers contributed to Farro’s ‘Friends of Farro Fundraiser’, helping the business weather weeks without trade.
By the time the restaurant confirmed its reopening, supporters had pledged more than R315 000 towards recovery efforts.
Inside the kitchen, preparations for the comeback have centred around a seasonal refresh rather than simply returning to business as usual.
With autumn settling over the Mother City during the closure period, the team opted to lean into cooler-weather comfort food and produce-driven dishes.
The updated menu keeps Farro’s familiar structure, including snacks, pasta, fish, meat and dessert, while introducing ingredients tied closely to the season.
‘Since we unexpectedly shuttered, Autumn has descended upon Cape Town, so it makes sense for us to open with a brand-new menu,’ Eloise explained.
Among the additions are quince-inspired elements across both the drinks and dessert offerings, including Ginger Cake, Quince & White Chocolate.
Diners can also expect earthy mushrooms, root vegetables and hand-rolled pasta filled with herb-infused potato and brown butter.
‘Our take on food at Farro has always been rooted in comforts and classics, and the cooler Cape Town weather really allows for this kind of food to shine,’ she added.
