Eikendal eases into summer with a sizzling new pizza and wine pairing experience that will tantalise your taste buds all season long.
Eikendal is a popular Winelands destination conveniently located between Somerset West and Stellenbosch. This summer, they are offering a delectable trio of mini pizzas, each specially designed to complement a matching wine from the estate.
The pairing takes place in the Eikendal tasting room, but for an even more laid-back summer experience, you might want to relax on the lawn at the water’s edge.
The bite-sized, thin-crusted pizzas are freshly prepared at the estate restaurant, Cucina di Giovanni (within 20 minutes), in vegetarian and non-vegetarian varieties.
The non-vegetarian option
The newly-released Eikendal Sauvignon Blanc 2015 is paired with a chicken and pineapple pizza. The sweet and sour notes of the pizza complement the tropical notes of the wine.
The Chardonnay, Janina 2014 is paired with a ham and mushroom pizza. The umami notes in the pizza pairs gorgeously with the unwooded wine for an earthy flavour sensation.
The Eikendal Merlot Rosé 2015 is paired with a Brie and cranberry pizza. The refreshing pizza sets off the vibrant fruity taste profile of the wine.
The vegetarian option
The crisp Sauvignon Blanc is paired with a pepper and pineapple pizza.
The Chardonnay, Janina 2014 is paired with a mushroom and olive pizza.
The Merlot Rosé 2015 is also paired with the Brie and cranberry pizza.
Other entertainment
Apart from wine tasting and delicious food, there’s also wildlife viewing and cellar tours. Fly fishing is available at the dam. There are gorgeous hiking trails from where you can view the fynbos. If you would like to spend the night, the charming Eikendal Lodge is available for bookings.
There is entertainment for children too, which includes a fun grape juice tasting. There will be snacks and wildlife images to colour in, courtesy of the Cheetah Outreach. To burn off energy, there’s a jungle gym and lush, rolling lawns for the kiddies to play on.
