Capetonians, raise your glass. And get it filled with Jenever Montane, a brand new gin from our very own Mother City. Created in conjunction with the Hope on Hopkins Distillery, this drink sets itself apart from others by incorporating flavours immediately reminiscent of Cape Town.
How so, you ask? Well, Jenever Montane doesn’t only contain ingredients traditionally used to make gin. It also contains fynbos that is indigenous to the Western Cape. So hopefully you’ll be thinking of the view from Table Mountain while sipping this particular spirit after a busy week.
Jenever Montane also represents South Africa’s up-and-coming presence in the production of handcrafted alcohol. It will hopefully showcase the expertise of local distillers to the rest of the world, by combining traditional gin-making methods with a particularly South African touch. Its producers also hope to move consumers away from masking the overall flavour of gin with a deluge of mixers.
Jenever Montane’s particular flavours are a testament to this goal. Aside from juniper, gin’s signature flavour, they include rose-geranium, lemon peel, coriander, and grapefruit.
Of course, you can enjoy your tot of Jenever Montane any way you prefer. It can be straight up with some ice, or mixed with tonic. Buy a glass, or a bottle, at any bar, restaurant or liquor store designated on its website. You can also order it via Yuppiechef.
If you do buy a bottle (or two) you should definitely snap a pic, tag Jenever Montane in it, and share it with #montanemoneyshots on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram. Every month, Jenever Montane selects their favourite picture, and the reward is a free bottle of gin!
