The 20 year old authentic South African steakhouse, The Butcher Shop & Grill, is a fine dining restaurant that is dedicated to quality meals, fine wine and a family atmosphere – and we were lucky enough to try out their lunch menu.

A seat right next to the clear view of Sea Point through The Butcher Shop & Grill’s floor to ceiling windows, with the midday sun piercing through the glass and onto our dining table, was the perfect setting to start off lunch at the exquisitely designed restaurant.

A board of bread was brought to the table to settle our grumbling tummies, but this wasn’t just any table bread. Fresh, bakery white bread alongside creamy butter and the butchery’s boerewors swimming in a small bowl of homemade tomato sauce was a dish that reigned true to South African flavour and was well thought through and designed. And that was just the table bread.

We dived straight into the main course with the Asian Tuna and Avo Tarter. Fresh local tuna served on top of a creamy avocado tartare with crispy shallots to add a crunch and some sweetness to this deliciously fresh dish, left us feeling clean and healthy post-lunch.

We threw all clean eating out of the window when we saw the dessert menu. An extensive dessert menu (we’re not complaining) boasts an array of delectable sweet treats with traditional South African style goodies such as Malva Pudding and Jelly & Custard. We couldn’t resist the ever classic Chocolate Brownie, and were blown away by what was presented when the cocoa indulgence arrived. The slightly crisp exterior broke into a dense, rich chocolatey middle, warm enough to melt a dollop of vanilla ice cream and not sweet enough to put you off. We were pretty passionate about the dessert and left zero trace, sight or crumble of brownie on our plate.

An afternoon well spent at The Butcher Shop & Grill had us satisfied, but wanting more, which means we’ll definitely be back for dinner.
