Brand new wine bar, Wijn, has launched in Paarl’s old jail. The bar is focused on discovering and bringing you unique wines, paired with great food and curated experiences.

Created by owners Sarette, Dries and Hanneli, Wijn offers lovers of wine the opportunity to uncover, connect and engage with unique and proudly South African wines and their makers, delivering a truly unbeatable, interactive wine experience. This wine bar allows everyone, no matter their wine expertise, to discover, taste, enjoy and take home amazing wines.

Its interior design is simplistic, with leather, wood, steel and touches of greenery. The trendy space is welcoming and warm.

What makes it different is that there is no traditional bar counter or shelves stocked with intimidating and overwhelming selections of wine. Instead, there is an open wine counter which invites you to explore the wine wall, take your wine glass and pour wine at your own time. This allows you to just taste, try a half a glass, or go all-out with a full glass of your favourite.

To make things even more accommodating, a trained sommelier and / or wine maker is available to provide you with information and answer questions you have about which ever wine selection you choose.

The concept was created to provide wine lovers the opportunity to meet the amazing wine makers that make up South Africa, to offer education on wines without making people feel intimidated and to ensure that people learn more about the stories behind these craftsmen and women.

The wines are curated and bespoke. This means that no wine menu is ever the same. Every month you’ll be able to sample new wines and buy them to take home.

Wijn offers guests an array of wine experiences throughout the month such as exclusive dinner-pairings presented by the winemaker.
