Sunday lunch. Two words that evoke different experiences from everyone. Of all the meals of the week, this particular one is the most meaningful. It denotes family. No matter the size of the meal, it is the togetherness that is celebrated first and foremost.

The cheerful banter of friends and extended family around the Sunday lunch table has been sorely missed during lockdown. Remember the days when you looked forward to cooking up a feast? Those days have expired, thanks to the never-ending lockdown meals we’ve had to prepare over the weeks.

If like me, you need a break from the rigmarole of prepare, cook, eat, repeat, you need to reach out to the President Hotel for a sensational Sunday lockdown lunch.

The meals are neatly and hygienically packed, and delivered to your home an hour before lunch time. The service was superb, 15 minutes prior to the food arriving, I received a message to inform me to put the oven on.

Receiving a box of food is like opening Christmas presents these days. It is just as rewarding, if not more.

Lunch, all lined up.

The menu changes every week. Lucky for you, the fennel mosbolletjies are on the menu this week too, so you have that to look forward to. The menu we had the pleasure of sampling can only be described at the quintessential Sunday lunch. The main dish was a succulent, and juicy sous vide chicken with tamari sauce.

The chicken was prepped to go straight into the oven. The rest of the side dishes needed a quick microwave, and they were ready to dig in.

There is no doubt in my mind that Chef Jacques Swart has special powers that make patrons smile from the inside out with his cuisine. Wok fried pak choy with the most subtle, delicious char, coconut shavings and sesame were included as the side dish. Savoury rice with a hint of rich saffron – and a creamy coleslaw completed the meal.

Sunday lunch from the President Hotel.

The silence at the table spoke volumes. A sticky brandy pudding with a toffee anglaise and caramel popcorn rounded off an incredible Sunday lunch.

Chef will graciously accommodate vegan, vegatarian, pescatarian, gluten-free and Banting diets. So until you can enjoy the sea breeze in your hair while soaking up the best views poolside from the President Hotel, you can order in and give yourself a Sunday off.
