Farm stalls bring back childhood memories of long, cross-country roadtrips: long drives, music playing from the car’s cassette player, ‘eye-spy’ games, and stopping for refreshments and a stretch of limbs at one of the quaint farm stalls on the way. Peregrine Farm Stall on the N2 is a roadside stop equipped with anything and everything a weary traveler or family trip might need.
The Farm Stall
Peregrine Farm Stall is located on the N2, about one hour’s drive from the city centre, where it is nestled in the middle of the apple valley of Elgin. It was established in 1964 and have since grown in size and status.
The farm stall, named after a heritage peach, offers an abundance of locally sourced artisanal goods and wholesome, responsibly farmed, fresh produce, such as fynbos honey, fresh cold-pressed juices, craft beer, and champagne-style apple cider. At the entrance, you are greeted with the aroma of freshly baked goods from their bakery’s large selection. Peregrine is also known for their legendary pies with perfect pastry and generous fillings.
For the travelers who are looking for a bit of a rest, there’s also an adjoining café that offers a menu with fresh, homestyle meals that consider both the customer and the local producers. The café has a relaxing, yet stylish ambiance with both indoor, outdoor or sheltered seating options. In the summer, they keep customers cool with light, misty sprinklers; in the winter, their heaters will fend off the chilly air.
A wide selection of coffees and ready-to-eat meals are also available on their take-away menu for those who are more pressed for time.
Pop-Up Stalls
The Farm Stall and café are not the only things you’ll find at Peregrine Farm Stall; there are numerous pop-up stalls and shops to explore during your visit.
Currently, there are a total of nine other enterprises on the premise. From books and plants, to pet accessories and a car wash, there are a lot of spots where you can indulge in some spending. Some of our favourites are:
1. Liberty Books
Liberty Books is a carefully curated bookstore right next to the Peregrine café. This little shop has become one of the most Instagrammable bookstores in the Western Cape, with many customers posing in the iconic circular reading nook at the front of the store. But they are more than just a pretty picture online. They also source and order books, curate bespoke libraries, take book returns or give credit for desirable books, and host discussion evenings and author events.
2. The Book Bus
The Book Bus, a secondhand bookshop-on-wheels, is outside, closer to the kids’ play area. This bookstore is housed in a 1970s Provincial Library Bus and was established in October 2018.
3. Gaia’s Nursery
Gaia’s Nursery is a self-sustaining nursery that offers a variety of healthy and strong plants at reasonable prices. They aim to be environmentally-friendly and quality choice.
The Peregrine Farm Stall also houses a beautifully designed play area for the kids, where they can tire themselves out by clambering on the statio stationary tractors and the jungle gym. The outdoor spaces are fully pet-friendly, so the whole family can be treated during the visit.
