The famous Shimmy Beach Club launched their summer menu for 2017 last week to a table full of media and influencers. Executive Chef Adrian Cook unveiled the club’s sizzling new menu and handed over to Head Chef Michael Keating to take everyone through the latest additions.

Speaking to Cape Town Etc, Keating said he wanted the menu to be inclusive of all kinds of food.

“We wanted to include everyone and we wanted the food to be exciting,” he said, and it certainly hit the mark.

We were welcomed with a fresh Basil Kombucha cocktail – an infusion of vodka and strawberry syrup. Sipping drinks on the outdoor deck and enjoying the endless ocean views Shimmy has to offer should be the only way to enjoy summer.

Canapés were a spicy chicken, avocado, vanilla pinapple and Macadamia nut poke spoon. The Norwergian salmon sashimi, avocado and jalapeno poke dish was a real crowd pleaser too. The spicy jalapeno brought the subtle salmon and avocado to life. Poke has done some great things to Cape Town’s food scene.

We made our way inside the chic restaurant and sat down to delectable starters. First up were mini tuna fish cakes served with Thai infused salmon – perfectly opposing crunchy-to-soft texture. The peppery spinach quiche followed and is definitely worthy of a second visit to Shimmy.

Main courses consisted of a succulent lamb lollipop with a chickpea and feta salad. Indulgence is the theme of the menu. The juicy beef burger with a crispy piece of bacon is a firm lunch time favourite every summer, and it totally makes sense why it is. A cider-braised pork belly served with crackling added even more decadence to the plate. We are extremely pleased with new menu, can you tell?

A sweet ending to a flavour-rich lunch was definitely needed – the fluffy Bar One mousse is an instant win. Soft and creamy, the texture hit all the right notes. While chocolate goes down well with everyone, Shimmy brought out three other show-stopping desserts, if you are not a chocaholic.

Pastry Chef Anina Mans pleased every sweet tooth in the room with her Baked Alaska, pineapple fridge tart and popcorn brulee. True to their word, there is something for everyone on the new menu, and definitely the only way to while your summer days away – cocktail in hand.
