Dubbed the biggest awards show of the year, Kfm 94.5 invited the people of Cape Town to vote across 30 categories for the 2022 Best of the Cape Awards. No funny business, just you choosing the Mother City’s finest. And Cape {town} Etc is adding to the gees by proudly supporting each winner.
Stay tuned: over the next few weeks, we’ll be sharing a full feature story on each of your favourites. Salt, spice and everything nice – This is Cape Town’s ‘Best Biltong’:
Best Biltong: The Boer & Butcher
The Boer & Butcher is a country-style butchery with a fascinating history. One of their outlets started as a hair salon, nogal!
But first, the farm:
In 2009, The Boer & Butcher started operations at a traditional ‘vleiskamer’ (farm-style butchery) constructed sometime in the 1916’s on their livestock farm in the Darling/Hopefield area in the Western Cape. They wanted to share this passion with friends and families in the city that understood and appreciated the value of old-school, natural rearing methods.
Now a fully operational butchery, the seed that grew derived from a passion for natural healthy farming methods, a love for the countryside, its people, culture and values.
From the farm to Cape Town:
Thanks to the organic growth from their humble beginnings on the farm, The Boer & Butcher expanded its offerings by opening retail stores throughout the Mother City, starting at the popular centre of Stellenbosch Square.
In 2013, the team converted the 60m2 hair salon into a banging biltong oasis in Durbanville. It’s been salt and spice, and everything nice ever since.
From cutting hair to cutting out any meat that contains nasties, like growth stimulants, The Boer & Butcher serves nothing but the best – earning its title as the ‘Best Biltong’ in Cape Town. Their focus on exceptional quality spurred further expansion, opening more outlets in Paarl, Boston and Haasendal.
In addition to top-tier biltong, the Durbanville, Stellenbosch, Paarl and Haasendal stores feature a Burger Bar – where the Boer & Butcher’s famous Steak Burger is crafted. There’s a healthy wine and beer selection, too. All of the retail outlets have a divine deli and grocery section and Haasendal has a saloon. Be sure to dive into a R69 burger special (Mondays and Thursdays). The saloon also has a Tuesday pizza special – wood-fired goodness for R105.
Today, the Boer & Butcher supports a specially selected group of farmers who help supply their increasing demand. A far cry from mass production, the focus is all about keeping a close relationship with farmers throughout the production of livestock. This is locals supporting locals at its finest. And customers can’t get enough.
A fan favourite is the chilli biltong that’s packed with spicy goodness. But there’s a dried decadence for everybody – rare and fatty, well done and lean, cabanossi, droëwors and more.
From poultry to pork and world-class beef, The Boer & Butcher has something for every braai. Whether it’s braaivleis or biltong you’re after, there’s no better place to get a savoury delight that’s a cut above the rest.
“Anything fresher on our menu would still be out in nature.”
