A day or night out on the town means parting with hard-earned cash, in this economic climate, you want to make sure it is money well spent. I would advise you to go where the cuisine is consistently good, and the view matches the food. There are a few to choose from in Cape Town, but none that have perfectly cooked steak like the Hussar Grill in Mouille Point.

Dark wooden tables and chairs let you know you’re in a steakhouse. The views will keep you coming back for more, but so will the food. Perfectly situated across the road from the beach, you can’t help but stare at the Atlantic and inhale the natural salt in the air.

Friendly staff usher us to our table and a few minutes later the restaurant manager, Leendert de Bruin, arrives with fresh cuts of various meats to tempt our palates. I am fascinated by his in-depth knowledge of each carefully carved piece of meat. His understanding assures me that our lunch is going to be superb.

The current lunch special is great value for money, R130 will get you a delicious two courses from a limited menu and is available at all branches. The options for starters are tomato soup, peri-peri chicken livers or tender-fried calamari strips. I opted for the calamari, and you should too. The dish was fresh and tenderly prepared with a hint of chili. The portions are pretty sizable for starters.

The calamari starter.

The main dishes offered on the lunch menu special includes a 200g rump or sirloin steak, parmesan chicken or calamari. After the display of delicate meat, there was only one question, rump or sirloin? Rump it was, with a side of thick-cut chips. You can’t possibly go wrong with this choice. My meal was served piping hot and my knife slid through the piece of steak effortlessly. Each succulent bite was savoured. The chips were fresh and perfectly crisp on the outside.

The rump was succulently prepared.

Your R130 will get you this far, and for most this is far enough… but I had to take one for the team and try out the dessert. The Hussar Grill ice cream dessert is a mishmash of so many decadent niceties – ice-cream, nougat, peanut brittle, marshmallows, honeycomb and nuts, covered in a dark rich chocolate sauce – served unadulterated. It is the curtain-closer on a satisfying steak lunch.

Hussar Grill has an extensive wine list to pair your beautifully prepared steak with. I highly recommend that you allow the chefs to prepare your piece of meat the way he sees fit, their understanding of the various cuts allows for perfect preparation. And when you roll out of there, take a leisurely walk on the promenade or a stroll alongside the beach to conclude a more than reasonable priced meal.
