The Marine Hotel, located in popular coastal town Hermanus, will be joining forces with some of the Overberg’s most lauded wine estates to offer a range of winner dinners this winter. Starting Saturday 4 June, the events will take place every month and will be co-hosted by the winemaker of each featured wine estate.
The Marine is one of South Africa’s most spectacular seaside hotels. Located on Hermanus’ famous cliff path, overlooking the breathtaking Walker Bay, the hotel offers visitors the unique opportunity to experience the finest land-based whale watching in the world from June to November each year. Guests are even able to view these majestic creatures from the comfort of their own sea view room. The Overberg region is also a must for adventure sport seekers, offering a host of activities – including hiking, mountain biking and marine sports.
Regarding their gourmet events, Melissa Burns, the general manager of The Marine says: “We are fortunate to be located in the heart of the Walker Bay area and we are very excited to collaborate with our local wineries to showcase the top-quality wines of our region. We will be presenting these perfectly paired 5-course menus in our elegant restaurant, The Pavilion, providing diners with the opportunity to interact with the winemaker and our executive kitchen team.”
What’s on the menu?
To give you a taste of what to expect at these dinners, the Marine Hotel has shared the menu of the first event on 4 June.
The event kicks off with a thoughtfully organized menu: guests will start with dainty canapés, including a medley of marinated and fresh heirloom tomato crostini, bocconcini, basil pesto, paired with Whalehaven unwooded Viognier 2020; and chicken liver parfait cornetto, with soy toasted pumpkin seeds and sultana purée served with Whalehaven Cabernet Franc 2015.
After a bread course served with roasted garlic aioli and salsa verde, there is sustainably caught hake, served with white wine velouté, confit saffron potatoes, wilted baby spinach and paired with Idiom Bianco Pinot Grigio 2020; and Confit springbok shank, roasted beetroot, smoked potato velouté, fynbos mustard, roasted garlic, and legume crispy, paired with Whalehaven Old Harbour Merlot/Shiraz 2016.
The main course is grilled sirloin steak, with roasted baby carrots, aromatic carrot purée, pickled baby onions, and thyme jus gras served with a glass of the Idiom Bordicon Blend 2016.
Ending things on a sweet note, fans of baked cheesecake are in for a treat with dessert, which is served with segments of citrus, passionfruit curd and short bread crumble, and coffee or tea.
As we head into the whale watching seasons, Hermanus will be the ideal destination to visit. The Marine Hotel will offer the perfect lookout point to watch the pods of dolphins and whales as they swim in the bay below, and with their gourment dinners lined up for the winter months, visitors will be spoiled with incredible sights and smells all day long.
