National Heritage Day has become synonymous with the art of the braai. So much so, that it has become affectionately known as Braai Day – a day where all cultures, races and creeds come to together to socialize and roast meat over a fire.

If you feel like keeping the braai-making to a minimum this year for Heritage Day, here are the best places to celebrate the public holiday by leaving the braaing to the masters.

Le Venue Restaurant at The House of J.C Le Roux is launching three exciting braai menus in honour of Braai Day. Three different, tantalising á la carte menus will be on offer, including a banting braai menu consisting of a marinated beef skewer, oven roasted Mediterranean vegetables and coriander yoghurt dip at R98 per person. Add roosterbrood and potato with chive cream cheese to the menu for a bit extra, or go all out and indulge in a chermoula chicken kebab, Toulouse sausage with rustic garlic and parsley accompanied by a chef’s salad in a mason jar and a smoked paprika mielie.

BOSCHENDAL HERITAGE DAY FARM FEAST

Spend a day chilling at the picturesque Boschendal Estate, as the smell of a delicious braai lingers around the vineyards at this historic Franschhoek Valley wine farm. You can be rest assured that there will be an assortment of wines to perfectly complement that slow-turning Ox spit-roast. Live entertainment will be provided by the bluesy folk act Slow Jack.

HERITAGE DAY AT THE BACKYARD GRILL

If there’s one thing the guys over at The Backyard Grill know how to do well, it’s roasting meat over a fire. The popular and relaxed Sea Point grill will be starting the fire from noon and will be preparing a variety of braaied meats and sides for every discerning local palette.

HERITAGE DAY MARKET At SHIMMY BEACH CLUB

Our favourite beach club will be home to an exciting market to commemorate National Heritage Day. Guests can expect good market fare including boerewors rolls, espetadas, pancakes and craft beer. A hit will be the beef or tuna espetadas done over a fire on the fine white sands of Shimmy Beach Club.
