Pistorius believes that he has already served enough of his 13-year prison sentence to be eligible for parole but the SCA’s Chief Registrar Elizabeth Vermeulen confirmed that the court’s first ruling on his sentence stood and Pistorius will only become eligible for parole in March 2023.
A series of challenges and rulings by the Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) led to confusion around when exactly his sentence became effective.
As reported by News24, Singabakho Nxumalo, spokesperson for correctional services said, “The number of court orders issued on the case involving inmate Oscar Leonard Carl Pistorius” had “led to a complication in determining the effective date of incarceration for the purposes of calculating the minimum detention period.
“The department had to go back and seek clarity from the Supreme Court of Appeal, and this is an important element in order to ensure that the inmate is considered for parole placement at the right time.”
Pistorius was convicted for the murder of Reeva Steenkamp, his then-girlfriend whom he shot and killed in the early hours of 14 February 2013 through a locked bathroom door, alleging that he mistook her for an intruder.
