The struggle to ‘shut down’ before bedtime is real, and we often find ourselves tossing and turning for what seems to be the longest time before eventually achieving peaceful sleep. When those age-old remedies start to fail, then it’s time to explore other options.
Here are six ways to unwind before bedtime:
Enjoy a calming beverage
Warming your body from the inside can be just what you need to relax before calling it a day. Chamomile tea can be a great way to unwind and relax. According to healthline, chamomile tea contains apigenin, an antioxidant that binds to certain receptors in your brain that may promote sleepiness and reduce insomnia.
Switch off all electronic devices
It might not be the best idea to scroll away just before bed so schedule a time to ‘detox’ and place your phone on the cabinet (faced down in case those emails and texts come calling). The light from electronic devices keeps your brain alert, making it more difficult to fall asleep.
Take a relaxing bath
Mmmm, there’s just something about a warm bath coupled with candles, soothing tunes playing in the background and perhaps some bath oils while you’re at it. You deserve it! So make this a way of life whenever you can.
Read a book
Grab your favourite book and get reading (no tablets or e-books allowed)! We’re going back to basics with the classic paperback book to create a sense of peace. Fictional stories often have a way of relaxing your mind by helping to escape the reality of everyday life.
Make your bedroom a place of relaxation
You’ll light candles to set the mood for a romantic dinner with your significant other, so why not do the same for yourself? Atmosphere is everything and setting the right tone can help you to wind down. Calming shades of paint and a comfortable mattress can work wonders.
Remove the clutter by jotting down your thoughts
When your mind is racing (and it often will), it’s a great idea to write down exactly how you feel as an outlet. Perhaps you’ve encountered someone from your past, had an argument with a loved one or are battling to adjust to this new way of living. It can be helpful to put pen to paper and release those built-up emotions.
