Cape Town’s growing reputation as a wellness destination continues to take shape as a new set of heat-and-cold experiences draws local and international attention.
Insights shared by One Flow Yoga and Wellness Social Club in Green Point indicate that contrast therapy, already gaining global traction, is emerging as one of the city’s most sought-after wellness rituals.
With the Mother City recording a 45.2% visitor engagement rate in wellness-focused activities, the timing aligns with a steady shift in how people choose to unwind, recover, and connect.
Information from the club explains that contrast therapy involves moving between high heat, typically in a sauna, and cold immersion, such as an ice bath or plunge pool.
While often described today as a rising trend, One Flow notes its deeper lineage in Nordic, Japanese, and Eastern European traditions. Research referenced in the announcement highlights that the body responds strongly to these rapid temperature changes: circulation increases, inflammation decreases, resilience builds, and moods improve.
Where wellness meets community
What sets the Green Point venue apart is its focus on shared healing, as the team at One Flow describes their signature Sauna Journeys as immersive experiences that blend heat, cold, breathwork, sound, lighting, and human connection.
Co-founder, yoga teacher, and sauna master Jeanae Dumas emphasises the modern relevance of the practice.
‘Contrast therapy may be trending right now, but it’s not at all a fad. In fact, you can say that it is a necessity in modern life, our Sauna Journey experiences are also specially conceived and designed as social wellness experiences,’ she stated.
The social aspect is not incidental. The team explains that moving between heat and icy plunge is physically and mentally demanding, but doing it alongside others creates natural encouragement and camaraderie.
Most local contrast therapy offerings are described as solitary, quiet treatments, but One Flow approaches it differently.
‘We must remember that the age-old traditions of this practice are social… At One Flow, we wanted to recapture all those extra health and wellness benefits that come with togetherness,’ Jeanae adds.
At the same time, Co-founder and architectural designer Aidan Hart says the facility was built specifically with these experiences in mind.
‘What is exceptional is how the quality of the environment enhances not just your social connectedness but your contrast therapy experiences,’ Aidan outlined.
The Sauna room uses temperature and oxygen-controlled systems, while the Plunge Sanctuary features Japanese-cedar ice baths.
Before cold immersion, visitors can rest on a smooth marble Hammam slab illuminated with infrared light, selected for its benefits to skin, blood flow, and muscle recovery.
One Flow’s December calendar reflects how varied these sessions can be, as the club says visitors can expect sober First Thursday sauna rave sessions with DJs, along with calming Rest and Restore journeys every Sunday.
Trained Sauna Masters, mentored by Jeanae, guide the more structured offerings, bringing ritual and safety into each session.
Jeanae summarises the intention behind the space: ‘Contrast therapy is ultimately, a shared ritual that taps into something ancient, elemental, and profoundly human. And at One Flow, the hottest–coolest experience in wellness is also a real celebration of what happens when we breathe, move, sweat, and plunge together.’
