Dis-Chem has announced a significant recruitment initiative aimed at fortifying the pivotal role of nurses within its Health Hub stores in an ambitious stride towards enhancing primary healthcare in South Africa, Cape {town} Etc reports.
This move is part of a broader strategy to integrate healthcare services and improve accessibility, particularly in under-served communities.
The company is set to introduce auxiliary nurse positions across its network of clinics, allowing for dedicated care assistants to take on essential supporting roles.
This restructuring is designed to free up registered nurses to apply their clinical expertise more fully, engaging in in-depth patient assessments, personalised care guidance, and referrals—fields where their skills can have the most substantial impact.
‘Nurses play a vital role that goes beyond basic screening, vaccinations, and taking vital signs,’ said Lizeth Kruger, Clinic Executive at Dis-Chem.
‘Within the nurse-led Health Hub model, auxiliary nurses can perform routine measurements and tests. This approach strengthens primary healthcare delivery, making nurses an accessible first point of care and allowing us to reach more consumers efficiently and affordably.’

The Health Hub concept, first launched at Melrose Arch in May, integrates clinic, pharmacy, and medical insurance services, creating a one-stop destination for health-related needs.
Customers can access expert care and wellness products all in one visit, greatly enhancing the healthcare experience.
The role of auxiliary nurses will encompass basic clinic functions such as recording vital signs, assisting with administrative tasks, supporting consent procedures, and managing patient flow. This strategic addition is not just about operational efficiency; it’s a commitment to fostering a more intuitive clinic experience for customers.
‘The addition of auxiliary nurses to the stores is an essential step in the expansion of clinic capacity,’ Kruger explained.
‘The clinic nurse will remain responsible for clinical oversight and professional nursing duties, ensuring all services are delivered within the correct professional and regulatory framework.’
As the roll-out of the Health Hub continues, Dis-Chem predicts that the addition of two to three auxiliary nurse positions per store will significantly increase nursing capacity. ‘We are witnessing an ever-growing demand for nurse consultations across our network,’ Kruger noted. ‘This is a crucial step in increasing access, affordability, and capacity within the communities we serve.’
Beyond healthcare implications, the initiative plays an essential role in job creation and career progression in nursing, contributing to the overall enhancement of healthcare delivery in South Africa. ‘This operational structure not only supports healthcare but also addresses the pressing need for skilled nursing professionals in the country,’ Kruger concluded.
