This Salt Awareness Week the Heart and Stroke Foundation is pushing salt awareness. South Africans are being urged to rethink their salt habits as new concerns grow over high blood pressure and hidden sodium in everyday foods, reports Cape {town} Etc.
The Heart and Stroke Foundation South Africa (HSFSA) says too many people are unaware of how much salt they consume daily. ‘What people think they eat is not always reality,’ said CEO Prof Pamela Naidoo. ‘Many are at risk without knowing it.’
Natural salts still contain similar sodium to table salt, while HSFSA warns poor label reading increases blood pressure risk.
Research shows more than one in three South Africans have high blood pressure, yet most report what they believe is a normal diet. ‘Hidden salt in bread, sauces and processed meats is a major concern,’ the foundation noted.
The HSFSA is backing a new campaign called The Salt Shift, which encourages people to swap regular salt for potassium salt substitutes. ‘This is a simple change that can support healthier blood pressure levels,’ said Ms Cari Erasmus, registered dietitian.
Experts say potassium salt can help reduce sodium intake and lower heart risks. A Wits University study found many participants still enjoyed the taste, with 62% saying they would use it regularly.
However, experts warn people with kidney or heart conditions to consult a healthcare professional first.
‘Better label reading and awareness are key,’ said Ms Shonisani Nephalama.
