On 6 December, Cape Town’s wildfire management Volunteer Wildfire Services (VWS) hosted its annual Open Day at the Newlands Fire Base and B-well came to support.
They drew more than 2000 residents for a day of education, awareness and fundraising aimed at combating the growing threat of wildfires.
The event comes against the backdrop of a challenging 2024/25 wildfire season, which saw over 11 000 veld and wildland fires reported and more than 32 000 hectares burned across the Western Cape.

As the largest volunteer firefighting organisation in South Africa, VWS operates with over 350 dedicated volunteers across four stations.
Their mission goes beyond firefighting – it’s about reducing risk and saving lives through education and community engagement.
This year, B-well, a proudly South African brand known for its canola-based products, stepped up in support of VWS’s critical work.

‘Our brand is built on the promise of healthier living and responsible sourcing and wildfires threaten both agriculture and the communities we serve,’ said Murishca Martheze, B-well’s Marketing Manager.
‘Supporting VWS is a natural extension of our values – protecting the land that sustains our canola crops and the people who depend on them and so we were proud to join the VWS event and contribute to their efforts,’ she added.
For the event, B-well donated 90 litres of cooking oil to help prepare meals for attendees and added a flavourful touch with a canola-oil infused mayonnaise tasting station, delighting visitors throughout the day with a healthier sauce alternative
The Open Day featured thrilling activities such as helicopter displays, fire truck rides, abseiling and demonstrations by SANParks Honorary Rangers’ K9 anti-poaching unit.
Beyond the fun, the event achieved its purpose: raising much-needed funds for VWS’s operations, which cost over R4 million annually to maintain readiness and deploy crews.
