The Blue Downs athletic stadium opened on 27 January after a R30 million upgrade, giving local athletes, school teams and community clubs a regulation-standard venue for training and competition at the start of the season, reports Cape {town} Etc.
Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis led the official unveiling and said the investment aims to support grassroots sport and safer communities by providing structured, supervised activities for young people. ‘We can’t wait for the athletes of the broader Blue Downs area to hit this tartan track running after this major R30m upgrade,’ he said (CoCT).

Work included a full replacement of the tartan running surface, upgraded field-event areas for long jump, triple jump and javelin, refurbished change rooms and improvements to spectator seating and the wider precinct.
City officials said the project forms part of a wider programme that invested in several regional facilities to improve access to quality sports infrastructure.
Mayoral committee member Francine Higham urged the community to adopt and protect the facility so it can serve future generations. ‘This stadium belongs to the community, I call on residents to use it, respect it and protect it,’ she said.
Local schools and Western Province Athletics are expected to start booking the venue for fixtures and training immediately, with the City confirming ongoing maintenance plans to keep the stadium in use for years to come.
