Cape Town’s colourful bollards are getting a floral makeover, with local artists adding indigenous flowers and plants to the city centre.
Posted by Good News South Africa, Artists from HandCantrol360 have returned to Upper Waterkant Street, where another collection of bollards is being painted with colourful floral designs inspired by the Cape’s natural beauty.
The designs include watsonias, oxalis, strawflowers, agapanthus, arum lilies, geelblombos and bird-of-paradise flowers, according to Good News South Africa.
The new floral designs complement birds that have already been painted on nearby bollards. These include the Cape rockjumper, crowned lapwing, amethyst sunbird, southern double-collared sunbird and blue crane.
The project was commissioned by the Cape Town Central City Improvement District Urban Management team. Once completed, it will feature 84 individually hand-painted bollards along Upper Waterkant Street.
The CCID has previously described the project as part of efforts to enhance the area and create a more welcoming urban environment. Its Winter 2026 publication also confirms that HandCantrol360 painted the bollards with a combination of birds and flowers, including Watsonia, Oxalis and African lily.
