Cape Town has surged to the top of a global ranking of mountain getaways for 2026, beating some of Europe’s most famous alpine destinations to claim first place.
New data compiled by international connectivity provider Holafly, and reported by Travel News Africa, places the Mother City ahead of long-established mountain hotspots like Chamonix, Zakopane and Bergen, a significant moment for both the city and African tourism as a whole.
The ranking looked beyond just scenery, assessing destinations based on a mix of real-world travel factors and overall experience. These included hiking variety, cost, ease of access, accommodation options, air quality and general quality of life. Cape Town stood out across all categories, finishing with the highest overall score of 76.9.
At the heart of the city’s appeal is Table Mountain, the instantly recognisable landmark that dominates the skyline and continues to draw visitors from around the world. As one of the New Seven Wonders of Nature, it remains central to Cape Town’s global image.
What sets the city apart, however, is how much it offers beyond the typical mountain escape. Unlike traditional alpine destinations built around ski seasons and remote retreats, Cape Town delivers a far more varied experience within a relatively compact area. Visitors can tackle one of the city’s 281 hiking routes early in the day, reach breathtaking viewpoints by midday, and still have time to unwind along the Atlantic coastline by sunset.
That contrast is part of what makes the destination so compelling. Natural landscapes and city life exist side by side, with mountains, beaches, wine farms and wildlife experiences all easily accessible from the urban centre.

Ease of travel also works in Cape Town’s favour. With Cape Town International Airport located just over 10 miles from the city centre, getting there is far more straightforward than many of the world’s top mountain destinations.
The recognition comes as mountain travel continues to grow in popularity globally. Recent figures show that 71% of travellers are considering mountain-focused trips, while demand for accommodation with mountain views has risen sharply year on year.
Cape Town is increasingly being chosen as a primary destination rather than just a stop on a broader South African itinerary. While safaris remain a major drawcard, more travellers are heading straight to the city for its mix of outdoor adventure, scenic beauty and lifestyle offering.
In a travel landscape where variety and accessibility are becoming key, Cape Town has positioned itself firmly at the front, and for 2026, it’s officially leading the pack.
