There is something quietly grounding about standing under a sky full of stars, especially in a city that rarely slows down.

This April, the South African Astronomical Observatory (SAAO) invites Cape Town locals to do exactly that, with a series of night tours and open evenings designed to bring the universe a little closer to home.

SAAO night tours
Set in Observatory, the experience blends science with a gentle sense of wonder. Visualise telescopes, constellations, and stepping away from the noise, even for a moment, to take in the vastness of it all.

We’re just tiny specks, little Whos (Dr Seuss) on a speck, spinning in a sky full of wonder. Even the smallest speck can hold a whole world of magic. If you are new to stargazing or already a space enthusiast, the evenings offer a chance to slow down and look up.
The tours are guided, accessible and quietly magical. Think crisp night air, curious conversations and that familiar feeling of awe when you spot something far beyond the city lights. It is the kind of outing that works just as well for a solo reset as it does for a wholesome night out with friends.
Do keep in mind that stargazing is weather-dependent, so clear skies will make all the difference. Booking ahead is essential to secure your spot.
