Checkers describes the drink as a ‘tasty amasi kefir’ with ‘12 active kefir cultures’.
Viral amasi debate
The reaction has been fast and playful. One X user posted, ‘Amasi Vs Amasi VSOP.’ Another wrote, ‘it’s black and they named it ‘kephir’. The bottle’s nickname has turned a simple dairy listing into a wider conversation about packaging, branding and local taste memory.
Amasi itself sits firmly in South African food culture. Government and dairy sources describe it as a traditional fermented milk product and a cultured dairy drink.
According to Pricecheck R70 Kephir drink sits at a clear premium compared to standard amasi, which typically ranges between about R25 to R37 for a 2L bottle in major retailers.
This places the new product at almost double the price point of conventional amasi, reflecting its kefir-style cultures and branded positioning in the chilled dairy aisle.
The product’s black bottle, unusual name and familiar flavour profile have given social media users plenty to talk about, while Checkers’ online listing has added another layer to the buzz.
