South Africa’s signature grape variety has received a fresh new interpretation, and this time it comes in a can.
This comes after Boland Cellar launched Expresso Pinotage, a single-serve coffee-style red wine designed to fit into modern lifestyles while celebrating one of the country’s most recognisable wine styles.
The new release combines Pinotage’s distinctive character with rich roasted coffee notes developed through oak ageing, offering wine lovers a convenient option for everything from casual evenings at home to outdoor adventures.
A uniquely South African pairing & a name with a local flavour

Pinotage remains one of South Africa’s most celebrated wine success stories. Developed locally and grown across some of the country’s most respected wine regions, the cultivar has become synonymous with bold flavours and unmistakable character.
With Expresso Pinotage, Boland Cellar has leaned into that heritage while adding a contemporary edge. The wine’s coffee-inspired profile is achieved through ageing in heavily toasted French oak barrels rather than through additives, allowing the wine to retain its identity while developing layers of roasted complexity.
The grapes are sourced from vineyards in the Paardeberg area near Paarl, where deep shale soils and extended ripening periods help produce concentrated fruit flavours.
The winemaking process includes a cold soak before fermentation and maturation in toasted oak, resulting in a wine that showcases dark fruit notes alongside a mocha-like finish.
The release arrives at a time when convenience-driven formats are becoming increasingly common across the beverage industry.
Single-serve options continue to gain traction among consumers seeking flexibility without opening an entire bottle.
Expresso Pinotage’s 250ml can format aims to meet that demand, offering a portion-sized serving that can easily accompany a weeknight dinner, sunset gathering or weekend getaway.
The wine presents flavours of plum, prune and ripe blueberry, followed by coffee-inspired notes that linger on the palate. It is intended to pair with a range of dishes, from braaied meats and hearty pastas to venison, duck and mature cheeses.
The playful spelling of ‘Expresso’ is also part of the product’s identity.
The name nods to the uniquely South African habit of bending language to suit local culture, much like expressions such as ‘now now’, ‘just now’ and ‘aweh’ have become part of everyday conversation.
That local personality is central to the product’s positioning, a wine rooted in South African tradition while embracing changing consumer habits.
Unlike traditional glass bottles, the canned format is built for portability. Whether packed into a cooler box for a weekend away, enjoyed at a picnic, or opened during an impromptu gathering with friends, the format offers practicality without sacrificing quality.
The convenience factor may also appeal to consumers looking for moderation and portion control, allowing them to enjoy a single serving without opening a full bottle.
The wine is available through Port2Port Wine with a recommended retail price of R34.99 for a 250ml can.
