Rediscovering ballet in adulthood
Jo-Ann first explored ballet through Dance For All lessons in Blackheath at the age of nine. She performed competitively until twelve, when a studio policy halted her progress. Now a mother of four, podcaster and public speaker, she noticed the new De Moyencourt School of Ballet near her home.

At thirty-eight, she decided to lace up her pointe shoes once more.
‘I love how empowered and focused ballet makes me feel,’ says Jo-Ann Strauss.
Jo-Ann’s longtime friend, Jeannie, joined without hesitation. ‘The pliés felt familiar but the relevé introduced muscles I never knew I had…After those grand plié combinations my thighs were burning and my core felt brand new. When we left the barre, I walked taller, shoulders back, chin up, and my mind was buzzing with fresh possibilities,’ she writes (jeannieous.co.za).

‘The controlled stretches awakened muscles I had not known existed and the disciplined repetitions honed both my body and mind. We left the studio moving with newfound poise and a deeper appreciation for ballet’s blend of artistry and athleticism,’ Jeannie reflects.
