With the Cableway Charity Challenge taking place this weekend, organisers are calling for a last-minute surge in sponsorship to help push fundraising past the million-rand mark, reports Cape {town} Etc.
On Saturday, 9 May, participants will take on the iconic Platteklip Gorge route of Table Mountain, attempting as many ascents as possible in a single day to raise funds for a range of causes.
The annual Cableway Charity Challenge is aiming to surpass its 2025 total, when nearly R1.2 million was raised by 199 participants, including corporate and school teams, who collectively completed 600 laps up the mountain.
According to Wahida Parker, managing director of Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company, more than 140 climbers have already signed up for this year’s event.

‘With five days to go, we have already registered more than 140 climbers ready to spend Saturday 9 May taking on Platteklip Gorge as many times as their legs will carry them, and we’re asking South Africans to climb with them, in spirit and in sponsorship,‘ she said.
Last year’s funds were distributed among four beneficiaries, supporting early childhood development, wildfire response, mountain rescue operations and youth football development.
This year, proceeds will once again be channelled to impactful organisations, including South African National Parks Honorary Rangers, Volunteer Wildfire Services, Wilderness Search and Rescue and Ubuntu Football Academy.
Organisers say the climbers are already putting in the physical effort, but now it’s up to the public, corporates and schools to help drive the fundraising total even higher. The event is co-organised by the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company, along with founders Anton de Waal and Brigitte de Waal, and the JDI Foundation.
Supporters can sponsor a participant by visiting the official Cableway Charity Challenge website and selecting a climber to back.
