‘We siyayithanda iMfuleni. It was a joy to celebrate 50 years of this special community together with residents. The future here is only getting brighter,’ the mayor said.
The outlined plans include:
- a new sports field
- an upgraded fire station
- more than 2 000 houses
- R100 million in public transport upgrades over three years.
The City also said it would support policing in Mfuleni by providing space for a local policing headquarters and deploying LEAP officers to the area.
Residents at the event enjoyed local music, food stalls and children’s activities, and many welcomed the mayor’s public commitment while noting that everyday services remain a priority.

Mfuleni’s origins go back to the mid-1970s when the area served as a transit and relocation site under apartheid policies. Over subsequent decades the township grew rapidly.
Local NGOs and builders have worked on housing and community projects in the area, but campaigning for improved services and safety has continued to shape residents’ demands.
City officials said the anniversary is an opportunity to both celebrate community resilience and accelerate planned investments that organisers say will benefit families across generations.
