A 20-year-old Mia van Vuuren from Milnerton has captured the coveted title of Avanti SS Young Star Barista of the Year at the annual Cape Grace Reaching for Young Stars event held recently in Cape Town, Cape {town} Etc reports.
This prestigious initiative, aimed at promoting excellence in culinary arts, hospitality, and sustainable practices, celebrated its 17th year by showcasing remarkable potential and creativity among aspiring professionals in the industry.
Currently a second-year Hospitality Management student at The IIE School of Hospitality & Service Management (IIEHSM), Van Vuuren triumphed in a competitive atmosphere, proving her skills and passion for coffee artistry.
During the competition, she was required to prepare two espressos and two milk-based beverages within a strict timeframe of 10 minutes, offering judges insight into her choice of coffee beans along the way.
‘I was judged on the accuracy of the taste and tactile descriptors used,’ she explained.
Her preparation included attending intensive coffee training sessions with Avanti Coffee and Bootlegger, along with rigorous practice at the café where she works, Happy Folks, ensuring she brought both skill and confidence to the competition.
Celebrating her victory, Van Vuuren shared the special moment with her family and colleagues. ‘My mom was so proud; my bosses congratulated me; and my friends were very happy!’ she beamed.
Her interest in the hospitality sector was sparked at a young age when she observed a family friend, the General Manager of Cleopatra Mountain Farmhouse, who introduced her to various departments and roles within the hotel. ‘That’s when I realised I actually preferred his job above all the others.’
Van Vuuren’s professional journey began at Wimpy, followed by stints at Mugg and Bean, before settling into her current position at Happy Folks.
With aspirations to graduate in 2026 and secure a role at a five-star premium hotel, she embodies the spirit of ambition and excellence that the Cape Grace Reaching for Young Stars seeks to nurture.
‘I’m excited for what the future holds,’ she concluded.
