One of Cape Town’s most beloved dessert spots, Mochi Mochi, has announced that it will soon close its doors after five years of serving artisanal Japanese-inspired treats to locals and visitors.
The popular café, known for its handcrafted mochi and creative dessert flavours, has become a standout destination in Cape Town’s vibrant café culture. Since opening in 2021, Mochi Mochi has built a loyal following by blending traditional Japanese sweets with playful local twists.
Mochi a soft, chewy rice cake dessert originating from Japan is the café’s signature offering. Over the years, the menu has featured a range of decadent truffle mochis with unique flavours that cater to both adventurous food lovers and those with a sweet tooth. Current favourites include Milo, Pink Nesquik and Milktart, combining familiar South African tastes with Japanese confectionery techniques.
While the mochi desserts have always been the star attraction, Mochi Mochi’s menu extends beyond sweets. The café also offers a variety of savoury milk bread creations that have become customer favourites. Popular options include the cream cheese bagel pan, egg benedict pan and other fluffy milk bread bites inspired by Japanese bakery traditions.
The café has also stayed true to its Japanese roots through its drink selection. Guests can enjoy a range of traditional teas, including ceremonial matcha and wakocha, which pair well with the café’s desserts and light meals. These drinks have helped create an authentic café experience that celebrates Japanese tea culture while remaining approachable for local customers.

However, the café has confirmed that it will officially close on 18 April 2026, marking the end of an era for the much-loved spot.
Fans still have a few weeks to visit and enjoy their favourite treats before the doors close. Regular customers are encouraged to stop by one last time and perhaps try the café’s popular matcha mochi cookie before Mochi Mochi says goodbye.
