Wilmiena Johanna Koeries, affectionately known as Ouma Miena, reached her centenary on Thursday, 31 July 2025 and marked the occasion with a vibrant celebration at an Observatory venue.
The Maitland native welcomed ten grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and a close circle of friends to salute her journey from machinist to factory supervisor (Daily Voice).
At 100 years old, Ouma Miena enjoys robust health and vivid recollections. She attributes her longevity to a stress-free lifestyle, emphasising that she has never smoked or consumed alcohol. ‘I am amazed at myself for being 100 years old,’ she said, reflecting on her milestone with delight.
Born in 1925, Ouma Miena entered the workforce as a machinist before supervising a team in a local factory. She cherishes her fondest memory of meeting Mr Koeries, whom a nurse introduced to her one busy morning. She recalls how she initially planned to rebuff his friendship request, only to discover a deep affection shortly after. They married two years later and she remembers his kindness throughout their marriage.

Her son, Trevor Koeries, flew in from London to join the festivities. He described his mother as a ‘woman of valour’ whose faith and generosity shaped his values. ‘It is only the grace of God that has carried her,’ he said, praising her resilience during a recent health scare.
The gathering concluded with prayers of gratitude and uplifting songs, underscoring Ouma Miena’s enduring spirit.
