A decade ago, a simple mission took root in Wellington in the Western Cape: ensure that vulnerable children never have to face hunger alone.
Ten years later, that mission has grown into a nationwide effort that now feeds thousands of children every day.
Outside the Bowl Africa recently celebrated its 10th anniversary, marking a milestone that highlights not only the number of meals served over the years, but also the partnerships and communities that have helped sustain the organisation’s work.

Founded by Mark Maingard, the Wellington-based non-profit has become a recognised name in South Africa’s fight against child hunger through its VitaKidz nutrition programme. Today, the initiative provides meals to around 10 000 children daily through schools, early childhood development centres, churches and community organisations.
From Wellington to communities across South Africa
What started in a small Western Cape town has expanded far beyond its origins.
For many families, access to nutritious meals can mean better concentration at school, improved health and greater opportunities for children to succeed. Against the backdrop of rising food costs and growing pressure on vulnerable households, organisations such as Outside the Bowl Africa have increasingly become an important support system for communities.

Speaking during the anniversary celebrations, Maingard said the organisation’s success has always been driven by ordinary people choosing to make a difference.
According to the organisation, every meal distributed represents a collective effort involving volunteers, churches, businesses and donors who share a common goal of addressing hunger.
Turning a milestone into a new mission
Rather than simply celebrating its achievements, the organisation is using its 10th anniversary as the launchpad for an even bigger challenge.
Outside the Bowl Africa is aiming to build support towards delivering 10 million meals in recognition of its decade of service.
Several fundraising and awareness campaigns are already planned for the months ahead.
Among them is the Beanie Project, where each R100 sponsorship provides a warm beanie while also funding 20 meals for children in need.

Another major event will take place around Nelson Mandela Day in July. Teams from businesses, churches and community groups will gather at the Kingdom Foods Factory in Wellington on 17 and 18 July to pack VitaKidz food buckets destined for beneficiary organisations.
The organisation will also host a golf day in partnership with Inceba Trust and FNB ahead of World Food Day in October, with proceeds supporting nutrition programmes at early childhood development centres.
A celebration for children
One of the highlights planned for later this year is a special celebration for 10 000 children.
Scheduled for November, the event aims to bring joy to young beneficiaries through gifts, meals and a day focused entirely on recognising children and the communities supporting them.
Supporters will also have the opportunity to contribute through a Renault Kwid raffle, with proceeds helping to fund feeding programmes.
A reminder of the power of community
Child hunger remains one of South Africa’s most pressing social challenges, and many non-profit organisations continue to rely heavily on donations and partnerships to keep their programmes running.
Outside the Bowl Africa’s story reflects a broader trend seen across the country, where community-driven initiatives are increasingly stepping in to address food insecurity and support vulnerable families.
On social media, supporters have praised the organisation’s decade-long commitment and welcomed the launch of its new 10 million meals goal, describing it as an inspiring example of what collaboration can achieve.
