South African martial artist Rio Cruz won gold at this weekend’s Karate One Youth League in Harare, Zimbabwe, just six days after winning the national championship in KwaZulu-Natal, Cape {town} Etc reports.
The tournament marked a significant moment for the sport, as the Karate One Youth League – part of the World Karate Federation calendar – was hosted in Africa for the first time. More than 200 athletes from 34 countries took part, reflecting the continued growth of youth karate both on the continent and globally.

Competing in the Junior Kumite Male +76kg division, Cruz impressed with his speed, discipline and composure throughout the competition. He progressed confidently through the rounds to face fellow South African Handré Dreyer in an all-South African final.

Cruz asserted control early in the bout, setting the tempo with sharp attacks and maintaining his advantage to claim a decisive 9–3 victory and the gold medal.
The win caps off a remarkable week for the young athlete, highlighting his ability to deliver back-to-back performances at the highest level.
