Sandy Bay beach has never been official naturist site
Tucked beneath the Karbonkelberg, Sandy Bay beach is only accessible on foot from Llandudno or Hout Bay. Its seclusion has long made it a favourite for locals and adventurous visitors seeking quiet sunbathing and swimming away from the city bustle.

A hidden cove with a layered past
Since the late 20th century, some beachgoers used Sandy Bay as a clothing-optional spot, giving it a low-key reputation as a naturist-friendly cove.
Despite this history Cape Tourism notes that it has never been formally designated a naturist beach. Over the years a small nudist tourist economy has sprung up with naturist accommodations around the area.
SANParks clarifies status
‘Sandy Bay Beach forms part of Table Mountain National Park and has never been an official naturist beach,’ said Mr JP Louw, SANParks Head of Communications and Spokesperson.
‘SANParks recently engaged with key stakeholders, including the City of Cape Town, law enforcement and local community safety structures after concerns were raised about unlawful activities. The naturist element at the beach is now under review.’
‘We are preparing new signage for the area, which is currently under legal review. This will clarify the rules and help avoid any misunderstanding about permitted activities,’ Louw adds.
A timeline for the signage has not been given. Meanwhile, it may be best to keep on your clothes.
Access and what to expect
If you are visiting, you should prepare for a steep path down to the beach. The effort is rewarded with pale sand, Atlantic surf and sweeping views of the Karbonkelberg cliffs.
There are no facilities, so bring water, sun protection and pack out everything you brought in. Surfers sometimes catch breaks to the right while walkers pause on the cliff path to take in the scenery.
Being a considerate visitor
Sandy Bay rewards those who come quietly, prepared and considerate offering a rugged, peaceful slice of Cape coastline for swimmers, walkers and those simply seeking calm.
