The V&A Waterfront has announced plans to build a new purpose-built superyacht marina as part of a R230 million investment aimed at strengthening the city’s position as a global maritime and luxury tourism destination.
The development, located within the iconic harbour precinct in Cape Town, will provide dedicated berthing facilities designed specifically for large luxury vessels. According to the Waterfront management, the project is expected to attract more international superyachts to the city while creating new economic opportunities for local businesses and the broader marine industry.

The marina will include modern infrastructure capable of accommodating some of the world’s largest privately owned yachts. Plans include upgraded berths, enhanced security, specialised servicing facilities and improved shore-side amenities to meet the needs of high-end vessels and their crews.
Officials say the investment forms part of the Waterfront’s long-term strategy to grow Cape Town’s reputation as a premier destination for maritime tourism and luxury travel. The city is already a popular stopover for superyachts travelling between the Mediterranean, the Caribbean and the Indian Ocean, particularly during the Southern Hemisphere summer season.
By expanding the marina’s capacity, the development aims to encourage longer stays from visiting vessels, which often bring significant spending into local economies. Crew members and yacht owners typically make use of hotels, restaurants, provisioning services, maintenance companies and tourism experiences while docked in port.
The Waterfront also highlighted the potential employment opportunities the project could generate, particularly within marine services, hospitality and tourism sectors. Construction of the marina is expected to support local contractors and suppliers, while the completed facility will require ongoing operational and maintenance staff.
Industry experts have welcomed the announcement, noting that superyacht tourism is a growing global market that can deliver high-value economic benefits to coastal cities.
Once completed, the new marina is expected to further cement Cape Town’s status as a world-class harbour destination, strengthening the role of the V&A Waterfront as one of the city’s most important economic and tourism hubs.
