Photographers still have time to enter this year’s edition of the annual photography competition hosted by Vergelegen Wine Estate, which officially opened on 1 April and is now inviting submissions captured during the estate’s autumn season.
Set in Somerset West against the backdrop of the Hottentots Holland mountains, the 326-year-old heritage estate is once again turning its grounds into an open creative space for both amateur and professional photographers. Known for its tree-lined avenues, historic buildings, gardens and food experiences, Vergelegen continues to position itself as a visual playground for storytelling through photography.

This year’s edition introduces a key creative restriction: all entries must be submitted in black and white. Organisers say the requirement is designed to push entrants to focus on composition, contrast, texture and emotion rather than colour.
‘We invite visitors to capture the moments and details that, for them, define the magic of Vergelegen,‘ said marketing manager Caroline van Schalkwyk in a statement. ‘We are excited to see how the essence of the estate is interpreted this year in a different season and in black and white.‘

Autumn focus for entries
Unlike previous years, the 2026 competition restricts submissions to photographs taken during April and May, encouraging participants to capture the estate in its autumn atmosphere. The seasonal shift is expected to bring softer light, changing foliage and more dramatic contrast – elements that align closely with the monochrome theme.
Guided photo experiences return
The estate has once again partnered with Orms Direct and Fujifilm to offer guided photo walks aimed at enhancing participants’ skills and creative approach.
While one session is already fully booked, a second guided walk scheduled for 9 May will still go ahead, offering participants hands-on experience with Fujifilm equipment and guidance from professionals in the field.
Categories and entry details
The competition remains free to enter, with participants allowed to submit up to two images, each accompanied by a caption explaining the story or motivation behind the photograph.
Entries will be judged across four categories:
- Camera class
- Smartphone class
- Junior class (16 and under)
- People’s choice, voted for at the final exhibition event
Judging will be conducted by Vergelegen representatives and Orms Direct staff. Prizes include photographic equipment, estate experiences, wine, and restaurant vouchers.
Selected entries and finalists will also be exhibited at the estate and featured across its digital and print platforms, with full photographer credit.
Organisers say the competition continues to grow, with more than 500 entries received in previous editions, reflecting both the estate’s visual appeal and the strong interest in accessible creative opportunities.
Entries for the 2026 competition are now open via Vergelegen’s official entry platform.
