Soccer’s world governing body, FIFA, has confirmed that alcohol sales around the eight World Cup stadiums in greater Doha will be banned.
The announcement comes just two days before the 29-day tournament in Qatar is set to kick off.
FIFA Media released a statement on Twitter on behalf of FIFA and the host country regarding the decision made.
“Following discussions between host country authorities and FIFA, a decision has been made to focus the sale of alcoholic beverages on the FIFA Fan Festival, other fan destinations and licensed venues, removing sales points of beer from Qatar’s FIFA World Cup 2022 stadium perimeters.
There is no impact on the sale of Bud Zero which will remain available at all of Qatar’s World Cup stadiums.
Host country authorities and FIFA will continue to ensure that the stadiums and surrounding areas provide an enjoyable, respectful, and pleasant experience for all fans.
The tournament organisers appreciate AB InBev’s understanding and continued support of our joint commitment to cater for everyone during the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.”

Budweiser, owned by brewing giant, Anheuser-Busch InBev, was set to sell beer within the ticketed perimeter surrounding each of the eight stadiums before and after each game.
World Cup organisers had previously promised that alcohol would be on sale at stadiums and in fan zones for the duration of the tournament.
According to The Citizen, the U-turn in this decision reportedly came after FIFA was put under pressure from Qatar’s royal family.
In a tweet – since deleted – the beer brand tweeted “Well, this is awkward…” shortly before the alcohol ban announcement.
Various media outlets around the world have reported that this controversial last-minute decision could lead to legal action from Budweiser who has a $75m sponsorship agreement with FIFA.
Qatar’s FIFA World Cup 2022 will run from 20 November until 18 December 2022, hosting a total of 64 matches
