Ten passengers tragically lost their lives in an accident on Ou Kaapse Weg during the early hours of Saturday morning.

City of Cape Town traffic spokesperson, Maxine Bezuidenhout, confirmed the incident saying that the bakkie was transporting 23 passengers, of which 10 were fatally injured and 13 others seriously hurt.

“At approximately 2.10am this morning along Ou Kaapse Weg, the driver of a light delivery vehicle lost control of the vehicle as he was approaching Steenberg Road.

“It is alleged that the vehicle was transporting 23 construction workers at the time of the crash. Ou Kaapse Weg was closed in both directions for emergency vehicles,” said Bezuidenhout.

The road was temporarily closed in both directions between Steenberg Road and Noordhoek Main. With the rainy weather expected across the Cape today drivers are being cautioned to drive carefully.
