As South Africans welcome the new year, the most common resolutions for 2025 are all about self-improvement: saving money (26%), exercising more (22%), and adopting healthier eating habits (20%).
However, one goal was notably absent from the list: helping others.
While 5% of individuals aspire to become better people, the idea of contributing to the community didn’t make a major impact on this year’s resolutions.
Yet, experts suggest that those looking to improve their mental well-being in 2025 could find that helping others offers unexpected personal rewards.
Deb Zelezniak, CEO of the Santa Shoebox Project, advocates for the profound benefits of giving back.
‘Research shows that acts of kindness can significantly improve mental health, reduce anxiety and depression, and even increase life satisfaction,’ she explained. ‘Volunteering, in particular, connects us with others, reduces stress, and boosts self-esteem.’
Zelezniak points out that scientific studies back up the old adage, ‘it’s better to give than receive.’
Volunteering also fosters a sense of belonging and promotes a longer, healthier life. In fact, those who volunteer tend to enjoy better mental health and a deeper sense of purpose, which could make it a fulfilling addition to the year’s resolutions.
To help South Africans make a meaningful difference in 2025, Zelezniak is encouraging people to volunteer with the Santa Shoebox Project, which works to deliver gifts to underprivileged children across South Africa and Namibia.
‘We need volunteers to assist with managing drop-off centres and collecting gifts for children in need,’ she said. ‘Your time and effort can bring joy to thousands of children, and you’ll also experience the happiness that comes with giving.’
In 2024, over 500 volunteers helped the project reach nearly 75 000 children. This year, the goal is to support 80 000 kids, and Zelezniak is calling on more people to contribute their time, even just a few hours, to help achieve this ambitious target.
‘With a friendly smile, organisational skills, and a few hours of your time, you can be part of something that changes lives,’ she said.
The project will kick off its efforts in February, ramping up throughout the year.
For those looking for a meaningful resolution, Zelezniak’s call to action could offer the perfect way to make 2025 a year of giving – and self-fulfilment.
