A 25-year-old man from Atlantis was arrested on Sunday for being in the possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
According to police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg, officers were patrolling in Valleyfield Street, Saxonsea following a gang-related shooting in the area.
“They received a tip-off from the community of a male walking with a firearm and gave a description. The suspect was spotted and apprehended and found in possession of a .22 pistol with ammunition,” Twigg said.
Twigg further mentioned that the suspect will appear in the Atlantis Magistrates court on Tuesday on the mentioned charges.
Meanwhile, in an unrelated matter members of Cape Town Central Crime Prevention Unit arrested four adult males for the possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition and the possession of drugs on the corner of Wale and Long Street, Cape Town.
Their arrest comes after members were busy with patrols when they noticed two males walking in the street and when they saw the police vehicle turned around and ran to a vehicle that was parked nearby.
The vehicle was then searched and a pistol with ammunition, tik and mandrax tablets were found in the vehicle. Once charged the suspects will appear in the Cape Town Magistrates court.
