The 329-year-old Morgenhof wine estate in Stellenbosch, which is one of South Africa’s oldest wine farms, was auctioned for R52.25m on Wednesday to an overseas bidder.
This comes after the 210-hectare lush winery attracted several potential investors with most of the interest stemming from an international audience.
According to TimesLive, High Street Auctions director and lead auctioneer Joff van Reenen shared these sentiments by saying that there had been huge foreign interest in the sale, including from America’s Napa Valley.
Buyers from 13 countries registered for the auction, including bidders from the UK, Europe and others from China and India. Five bids were received for the property, starting at R40 million, TimesLive adds.
The seller of the historic estate was Anne Cointreau, a member of the renowned Cointreau family from the Cognac region of France.
Earlier this year, Van Reenen touched on some of the stunning features of the property by saying, “With regards the estate itself, two luxury manor houses with exquisite finishes and furnishings, a wine tasting venue, a wedding chapel, guest cottages, function rooms, a unique architect-designed sunken octagonal skylit wine cellar and a large award-winning winery are just some of the special features of this splendid property,” as per BusinessTech.
Here’s a peek into the magic and beauty that encapsulates this estate:
