Women’s Day is coming up this week, and it’s more than a public holiday. Here are a few events taking place around the city this week that you can spend your Women’s Day attending to make a difference.

Exhibition launch: We Cannot Be Silent

The multi-media exhibition, ‘We Cannot Be Silent’, is a showcase honouring the lives of girls and women who have suffered at the hands of the sexual violence and murder in South Africa. It is a ‘space for healing and a space to mobilise against the ongoing violence’. The exhibition will launch at the Old Heritage Halls at the Castle of Good Hope on Women’s Day 9 August 2017 at 11am. It will run until 24 September with a range of events planned throughout.

 

Totalsports Women’s Race

Take on the 5km or 10km and run with the South African women raising awareness around breast cancer this Women’s Day. The Totalsports Women’s Race will have the Mother City witnessing thousands of women running the streets for the the thousands of women who are, have and will be affected by breast cancer. Run for the awareness of prevention and treatment, and run for life. Enter here. 

 

Women’s Day ‘High Tea With a Difference’ at The Cellars Hohenort. 

This Women’s Day High Tea is a little bit different from the rest, given that you’ll be able to help out while celebrating in style. Enjoy tasty treats and a chance to win fabulous prizes, like vouchers from The Conservatory Restaurant and the award-winning Fresh Wellness Spa and Hair by Elouise. The main prize of the afternoon will be a set of diamond earrings from Protea Diamonds. A portion of the proceeds of the event will go to Chic Mamas Do Care in support of educational projects in local underprivileged communities. The High Tea is priced at R275 per person.

 

Women’s Day Sanitary Towel Drive

Take part in the supportive action of the Women’s Day Sanitary Towel Drive taking place in Belville. The public drive invites anyone and everyone to donate packages of hygiene items that will be given to homeless women in Belville. Packages need to be dropped off before 9 August, or you can get in touch with the organisers directly and they’ll arrange a pick up point close to you.
